President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an urgent directive for Ukraine to establish domestic production of highly critical Patriot air defense interceptor missiles as rapidly as possible, following a major breakthrough in licensing agreements with Washington.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday immediately after his return from the high-stakes NATO summit in Türkiye, Zelenskyy emphasized that the nation must mobilize all available resources to transition from importing weapons to manufacturing them locally.
The push for localized manufacturing comes on the heels of a pivotal bilateral meeting between President Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump in Ankara. During the summit, Ukraine successfully secured the necessary political approval and legal intellectual property licenses from the United States administration to construct the sophisticated air defense technology on Ukrainian soil. With the bureaucratic hurdles cleared in Washington, Zelenskyy stated that the immediate challenge shifts from international diplomacy to industrial execution.
“The political approval has been obtained from US President Donald Trump during our meeting in Ankara,” Zelenskyy confirmed. “The challenge now is to quickly take the practical steps needed to begin production. Ukraine must make every effort to start domestic production of these desperately needed interceptor missiles as soon as possible.”
The Patriot missile defense system remains Ukraine’s most effective shield against incoming ballistic and hypersonic missile strikes targeting critical civilian infrastructure and military assets.
By localizing the supply chain for Patriot interceptor missiles, Kyiv aims to achieve two critical strategic objectives:
- Reduce Supply Chain Friction: Eliminating shipping delays and political gridlock associated with foreign military aid packages.
- Enhance Long-Term Sustainability: Ensuring a continuous, reliable stockpile of air defense munitions manufactured within secure, domestic facilities.
