GAZA CITY: Palestinians in Gaza have reacted with mixed emotions to the election of Khalil al-Hayya as the new leader of Hamas, with many saying their daily struggle for survival remains a far greater concern than changes in the group’s leadership.
Al-Hayya secured victory in an internal Hamas election this week, defeating former political chief Khaled Meshaal to assume the movement’s top leadership role. His appointment comes at a time when Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian challenges following months of conflict.
For many residents, however, the leadership transition has been overshadowed by the urgent realities of finding food, clean drinking water, shelter and medical care.
Daily Survival Remains the Top Priority
Noman Saleh, 63, whose factory was destroyed during the war, said political developments have little impact on the hardships ordinary Palestinians continue to endure.
“People here are suffering. They are hungry and have been humiliated. Who is standing with the people today? No one,” Saleh said.
He criticized political divisions, arguing that national interests should take precedence over factional politics.
“Whether al-Hayya wins or someone else wins, it doesn’t make a difference to us. We want someone who is honest, loyal to the country and truly cares about the people.”
Leadership Change Comes at a Critical Time
Others believe the election could have broader political implications. Ahmed, a 40-year-old social media content creator from Gaza City, said the leadership change comes during one of the most difficult periods in Gaza’s recent history.
He expressed hope that the new leadership would focus on addressing the humanitarian crisis while navigating the complex political and security challenges facing Palestinians.
Gaza Faces Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis
Large parts of Gaza remain heavily damaged after months of conflict, with many families displaced and facing shortages of essential supplies. Humanitarian agencies continue to warn about worsening living conditions, limited access to healthcare and the urgent need for reconstruction and aid.
Analysts say Khalil al-Hayya’s leadership will be closely watched as Hamas confronts growing political, military and humanitarian pressures. Whether the leadership transition leads to significant policy changes remains uncertain, but for many Gazans, immediate concerns such as safety, food security and rebuilding their lives continue to outweigh political developments.
