Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw on Tuesday.
The tightly contested last-16 clash, played in Vancouver, was the final match of the tournament to be held outside the United States. After 120 minutes failed to produce a goal, Switzerland held their nerve from the penalty spot to set up a blockbuster quarter-final against defending champions Argentina.
Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero, producing a crucial save to deny Cucho Hernández in the shootout before Ruben Vargas calmly converted the winning penalty.
Both sides entered the match with impressive defensive records. Colombia had conceded just one goal in their previous four matches, while Switzerland had also built their campaign on a disciplined back line.
The first real opportunity came in the 21st minute when Kobel made an outstanding diving save to keep out Gustavo Puerta’s curling strike from outside the box.
Switzerland responded strongly after the first cooling break, with Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas making back-to-back saves to deny Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye. Despite both teams enjoying spells of possession, neither side found the breakthrough before halftime.
The Swiss started the second half brightly, but Colombia threatened on the counter. Luis Suárez fired wide from a promising position, while star winger Luis Díaz was kept largely quiet by Switzerland’s organized defense.
Ndoye came closest to scoring in stoppage time with a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no teammate managed to apply the finishing touch as the match headed into extra time.
The contest finally opened up during the additional 30 minutes. Colombia nearly broke the deadlock when defender Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a corner, before Kobel produced another fine save to deny Jaminton Campaz.
At the opposite end, Camilo Vargas reacted sharply to keep out substitute Zeki Amdouni, while Campaz later missed a golden opportunity to seal victory for Colombia late in extra time.
With neither team able to score, the match was decided by penalties. After misses from both sides, Kobel’s decisive save paved the way for Ruben Vargas to convert the winning kick and send Switzerland into the last eight.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday after Lionel Messi’s side defeated Egypt 3-2 earlier in the day.
The victory also marks Switzerland’s first World Cup quarter-final appearance since hosting the tournament in 1954.
