At a strategic diplomatic briefing in New York, Pakistan highlighted its Prime Minister’s Programme for the Elimination of Hepatitis-C, a major initiative backed by a $250 million allocation in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at eradicating the disease as a public health threat by 2030. Co-hosted by the Pakistan Mission and the UN Group of Friends to Eliminate Hepatitis on the sidelines of the UN High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, the event served as a platform to showcase Islamabad’s commitment to providing entirely free nationwide screening, diagnosis, and medical treatment. Speaking at the consultation, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, emphasized that the Prime Minister directly leads a specialized National Task Force of local and international experts to guarantee strict institutional oversight, while global health leaders, including Dr. John Ward of the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination, reviewed the global burden of the chronic infection and urged member states to elevate funding and political mobilization to curb a disease that claims 1.3 million lives annually worldwide.
