Michigan health officials are reporting a sharp increase in cyclosporiasis infections, prompting renewed warnings about food safety as investigators work to identify the source of the outbreak.
An outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, is expanding rapidly in the United States, with Michigan experiencing the highest number of reported cases.
Data released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services shows that the state had confirmed 1,251 infections as of July 9, marking a dramatic rise from just 170 cases reported at the end of June.
The increase comes despite relatively low national figures earlier in the outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last updated its nationwide tally on June 16, when 145 cases had been identified across 17 states and none were reported in Michigan.
What Causes Cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People usually become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, particularly fresh produce that has not been properly washed or handled.
Symptoms often develop within a week of exposure and may include:
- Frequent watery diarrhea
- Sudden or explosive bowel movements
- Stomach pain and cramping
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Reduced appetite
- Weight loss
Although most patients recover with appropriate treatment, symptoms can linger for several weeks if left untreated.
Investigation Continues
Health officials have not yet determined the exact source of the outbreak.
In a statement released on July 4, Michigan authorities said no single supplier of fresh produce has been linked to the growing number of infections. Officials have not provided additional information while the investigation remains ongoing.
Residents Urged to Follow Food Safety Measures
To reduce the risk of illness, public health officials are encouraging residents and food businesses, especially in southeastern Michigan, to take extra precautions when purchasing and preparing fresh produce.
Recommendations include:
- Choosing whole heads of lettuce instead of bagged or prewashed salad mixes.
- Thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables before eating.
- Washing hands before preparing meals.
- Using clean, safe water for cooking and food preparation.
Health Authorities Continue Monitoring the Outbreak
State and federal health agencies are continuing to track new infections while searching for the source of contamination.
Anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea or other symptoms associated with cyclosporiasis is advised to seek medical care, as the infection can usually be treated successfully with prescribed antibiotics.
The growing number of cases has heightened concerns over food safety, with officials emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene and safe food handling practices to help prevent further infections.
