Maryam Nawaz orders transparent probe into Lahore assault case involving foreign women
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a transparent and impartial investigation into the alleged assault case involving two foreign women in Lahore, directing authorities to ensure the inquiry is conducted fairly.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Faisal Kamran said the chief minister had taken immediate notice of the incident. He confirmed that all legal procedures had been completed and the suspect had been produced before a court in handcuffs.
According to Kamran, the case came to light after a man identified as Carlos reported that his daughter and her friend had been abducted. The two women had initially arrived in Islamabad before travelling to Lahore.
Police said the women later managed to escape from the vehicle they were allegedly being held in and sought refuge at a nearby shop. Investigators have since traced the vehicle’s route and documented the movement as part of the inquiry.
Kamran said Maryam Nawaz had instructed that the investigation be carried out by Lahore Police instead of the Crime Control Department (CCD), with an emphasis on transparency and due process.
He also questioned how a statement recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code had been leaked, describing it as a matter requiring investigation. He explained that a medical examination could only be conducted after obtaining approval from a magistrate. As no magistrate was immediately available, a station house officer (SHO) was sent to the magistrate’s residence to secure the required order.
The DIG further revealed that a suspect known by the alias “Boss,” whose real name is Waheed, has a criminal history with ten cases previously registered against him.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and examine all aspects of the case.
