HOUSTON: Houston Mayor John Whitmire has honored prominent Pakistani-American community leader Muhammad Saeed Sheikh for his decades of humanitarian service following his recent receipt of Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Service), one of the country’s highest civilian awards.
Speaking at a special recognition ceremony in Houston, Mayor Whitmire also revealed plans to visit Pakistan during his second term in office to strengthen people-to-people relations and expand cooperation between the United States and Pakistan.
The ceremony was jointly organized by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston and the Houston Karachi Sister City Association, bringing together Pakistani-American community members, business leaders, elected officials and civic representatives to celebrate Sheikh’s more than 40 years of public service.
Mayor Whitmire Praises Humanitarian Legacy
Addressing the gathering, Mayor Whitmire congratulated Muhammad Saeed Sheikh on receiving the Sitara-e-Khidmat from President Asif Ali Zardari, describing the award as a well-deserved recognition of a lifetime dedicated to serving humanity.
The mayor thanked the Government of Pakistan for honoring Sheikh, saying his humanitarian work has positively impacted countless lives regardless of race, religion or nationality.
He described Sheikh as a model of civic leadership whose decades of community service have strengthened friendship between Pakistan and the United States.
July 21 Declared ‘Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day’
During the event, Mayor Whitmire presented an official City of Houston proclamation, declaring July 21, 2026, as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day.”
The proclamation recognizes Sheikh’s longstanding humanitarian initiatives, leadership in community development and his efforts to promote mutual understanding and stronger ties between the Pakistani-American community and the City of Houston.
Mayor Announces Plans to Visit Pakistan
Mayor Whitmire also announced his intention to travel to Pakistan during his second term as Houston mayor.
He said the visit would focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation, encouraging cultural exchange and building closer relationships between the people of Pakistan and the United States.
Community Leaders Applaud Recognition
Prominent Pakistani-American businessman Syed Javed Anwar praised Sheikh’s decades of humanitarian work, saying he had dedicated his life to helping others without seeking personal recognition.
He described the Sitara-e-Khidmat as a fitting tribute to Sheikh’s lifelong commitment to public service.
Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston, Aftab Chaudhry, also congratulated Sheikh, saying his contributions in both Pakistan and the United States have become an inspiration for the wider Pakistani-American community.
According to the consul general, the national honor reflects not only Sheikh’s personal achievements but also the positive role played by overseas Pakistanis in strengthening Pakistan’s image abroad.
Sheikh Dedicates Award to the Community
Accepting the recognition, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh expressed gratitude to the Government of Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, the Consulate General of Pakistan, community leaders and everyone who supported his humanitarian efforts.
He said the Sitara-e-Khidmat was not a personal achievement but a reflection of the collective efforts of countless volunteers, supporters and community members who had worked alongside him over the past four decades.
“This award represents the collective efforts of our entire community,” Sheikh said.
He paid special tribute to Syed Javed Anwar, describing him as one of the strongest supporters of his humanitarian initiatives over the years.
The ceremony concluded with participants congratulating Sheikh on receiving one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors while reaffirming the Pakistani-American community’s commitment to strengthening friendship, cultural exchange and humanitarian cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
