China’s Tianwen-2 Probe Reaches Target Asteroid After Historic 1-Billion-Kilometer Journey

China’s deep-space exploration program achieved a historic milestone as the Tianwen-2 spacecraft successfully closed in on its target asteroid after traveling more than 1 billion kilometers (620 million miles). Launched in May 2025, the robotic probe spent roughly 400 days navigating deep space before successfully maneuvering within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of its objective. The complex rendezvous marks China’s very first attempt to study and retrieve material samples from a near-Earth asteroid, reinforcing the country’s ambitious, long-term space exploration roadmap championed by President Xi Jinping.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) officially confirmed the arrival by releasing a debut photograph of the targeted celestial body, an asteroid designated as “2016 HO3.” The high-resolution imagery captures a rugged, gray rocky mass suspended against the blackness of space. According to the CNSA, the spacecraft will now progressively enter closer orbits to conduct comprehensive scientific surveys, deploying onboard instruments to analyze the asteroid’s precise morphology (physical shape), material composition, and internal structure. These remote observations are critical for mapping the surface before attempting the hazardous touchdown phase.

Once the initial mapping phase is complete, Tianwen-2 will execute a complex “touch-and-go” maneuver to scoop up physical surface samples. After successfully securing the pristine space rocks, the probe will fire its thrusters to journey back toward Earth, eventually releasing a specialized return capsule into the atmosphere to deliver the cargo to scientists. While space agencies from Japan and the United States have previously pulled off asteroid sample-return missions, experts emphasize that the success of Tianwen-2 firmly elevates China into the top tier of deep-space exploration, demonstrating capabilities that extend far beyond lunar operations.
