An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has sent the prime suspect, Muhammad Saad Abbasi, to jail on a 14-day judicial remand following the murder of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq. During the proceedings, ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Mohammad Zulqarnain directed that an identification parade for the suspect be conducted while in custody. The court has ordered the investigation officer to submit a report once the process is complete and has scheduled the next hearing for July 20.
The prosecution informed the court that there are two eyewitnesses to the incident, which occurred on Islamabad’s Ninth Avenue. According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Margalla Police Station, the incident began when the suspect was seen harassing a woman. Group Captain Tariq, who was passing by, intervened to assist the woman, who then ran toward his vehicle seeking protection. The suspect allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation with the officer before temporarily leaving the scene on his motorcycle.
The FIR further states that the suspect returned shortly thereafter and opened fire on Group Captain Tariq, resulting in critical injuries that later proved fatal. The Islamabad Police have registered the case under both murder and anti-terrorism provisions based on the complaint filed by the Commandant of Air Headquarters. Authorities continue to process the legal proceedings as the investigation into the shooting, supported by eyewitness accounts, moves forward.
