New Jersey: Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense and hard-fought final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as Spain’s hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute to hand La Roja their second men’s FIFA World Cup title and end Argentina’s reign as world champions.
The winning goal came after Nico Williams headed the ball into Torres’ path, allowing the forward to fire a powerful close-range finish beyond Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who had produced a series of outstanding saves throughout the match.
Spain Dominate, Argentina Reduced to 10 Men
Spain controlled much of the possession and created the better scoring opportunities, while Argentina struggled to impose themselves and relied heavily on defensive tactics.
The match became increasingly physical, with referee Slavko Vincic allowing several robust challenges before finally producing yellow cards late in the first half.
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was booked before leaving the field through injury, while Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card in stoppage time after a reckless tackle on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi, leaving the defending champions with 10 men before extra time.
The numerical advantage eventually proved decisive as Spain broke through in the second half of extra time.
Emiliano Martinez Keeps Argentina Alive
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez delivered another world-class performance and was largely responsible for keeping his side in the contest.
He denied Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, and later Nico Williams with a string of brilliant saves, including a spectacular stop from Yamal’s late free-kick at the end of normal time.
Williams also had a goal disallowed during extra time after substitute Mikel Merino was ruled to have fouled Nicolas Otamendi in the build-up.
Despite Martinez’s heroics, Argentina were unable to recover after Torres’ breakthrough.

US President Donald Trump attended the final in New Jersey, while the tournament’s first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show featured performances by global music stars Shakira, Madonna, and Justin Bieber, extending the halftime break to 27 minutes.
