England has experienced its hottest June since official weather records began in 1884, driven by a record-breaking heatwave at the end of the month. According to the UK Met Office, the country reached a historic average temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 16.9 degrees Celsius set just a year prior. This intense weather system also marked the second-warmest June overall for the wider United Kingdom, characterized by exceptionally warm overnight temperatures and multiple consecutive days of rare, extreme heat warnings. A provisional peak temperature of 37.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in Norfolk, eastern England.

The unprecedented heat wave caused widespread disruptions across Britain, impacting schools, hospitals, and transportation networks. Climate experts from the World Weather Attribution group noted that such extreme June temperatures would have been virtually impossible 50 years ago, pointing directly to climate change as the driving force behind the intensity of the event. Because air conditioning and cooling fans remain rare in British households, climate scientists and local experts are now strongly urging the UK government to upgrade its national infrastructure to better withstand increasingly hotter summers.
