Exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui sentenced to 30 years in US prison for $1 billion fraud

Self-exiled Chinese business tycoon Guo Wengui has been sentenced to 30 years in a U.S. federal prison for orchestrating a massive, multi-layered financial fraud that swindled over $1 billion from his online followers. Convicted of nine out of twelve criminal counts—including racketeering, securities fraud, and money laundering—Guo was also ordered by Manhattan federal judge Analisa Torres to forfeit $889 million in restitution.

After fleeing China in 2017 to escape corruption charges, the former real estate mogul reinvented himself in the United States as a fierce, vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), amassing a massive online following. According to prosecutors, between 2018 and 2023, Guo exploited that hard-earned trust, soliciting funds from supporters under the guise of fake investment, media, and cryptocurrency schemes like GTV Media Group and the Himalaya Exchange. Judge Torres noted during the sentencing that Guo “preyed on those seeking to bring democracy to China,” using their life savings to fund an ultra-luxury lifestyle that included a 50,000-square-foot mansion, a $37 million yacht, and a $1 million Lamborghini.
