MASSIVE ASTEROID ZOOMING PAST EARTH OFFERING RARE VIEW FOR STARGAZERS

A massive asteroid is set to fly harmlessly past Earth this Saturday, providing a unique observation window for amateur astronomers equipped with large binoculars or small telescopes, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced.

The asteroid, designated as (152637) 1997 NC1, will make its closest approach on Saturday at 11:14 GMT. It is projected to pass at a distance of approximately 2,560,000 kilometers from our planet. While that might sound close in cosmic terms, it is safely more than six times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

Scientists have been tracking this particular celestial object for nearly three decades, allowing them to precisely map its path and physical traits:

  • No Impact Risk: Traveling at an immense speed of nearly nine kilometers per second, any threat of collision with Earth has been entirely ruled out by orbital calculations.
  • Size Estimates: First discovered in 1997, calculations based on the amount of sunlight reflected off its surface estimate the rock to be between 750 and 1,650 meters wide, though some recent ESA data suggests it could lean toward the smaller side.

How to Watch

According to Juan Luis Cano from the ESA’s Planetary Defence Office, close flybys of an object this large only happen every few years. However, this weekend’s observation comes with a slight challenge. “The bright nearby Moon might impede its observability at closest approach,” Cano noted in a statement.

For skywatchers aiming to catch a glimpse, the asteroid will first be visible from parts of the Northern Hemisphere during its approach. It will then be visible nearly globally as it sweeps past Earth, before transitioning into a Southern Hemisphere-only view as it speeds away into deep space. Successful viewing will largely depend on clear weather and dark skies away from city light pollution.
