Ryan Coogler returns to direct the final chapter as Prince T’Challa II becomes Wakanda’s next Black Panther.

LOS ANGELES: Marvel Studios has officially unveiled the future of Wakanda, confirming that British actor David Jonsson will take over the mantle of Black Panther in the upcoming Black Panther 3, bringing a new generation of heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The announcement was made during San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther 3 is currently in development and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028.

Marvel confirmed that David Jonsson, 32, will portray Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia.

The character was first introduced during the emotional post-credit scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where audiences learned that T’Challa had a young son living away from Wakanda.

With the third installment, Prince T’Challa II will officially inherit the legendary title of Black Panther, ushering in a new era for Wakanda.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler will return as both writer and director, completing the trilogy that began with the groundbreaking Black Panther (2018) and continued with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).

Marvel executives described the film as the next chapter in Wakanda’s legacy, focusing on leadership, family, and the responsibilities carried by the new Black Panther.

Marvel also confirmed the return of several fan-favorite characters:

• Letitia Wright as Shuri
• Winston Duke as M’Baku

In one of the biggest surprises of the event, Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington has officially joined the cast.

Although Marvel has not disclosed details about his character, Ryan Coogler previously revealed that the role was specifically written with Washington in mind, fueling speculation among fans about his importance to the story.

The announcement carries special significance for Marvel fans following the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed King T’Challa.

Boseman first appeared as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War (2016) before leading the historic Black Panther (2018), which became the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The actor passed away from colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43.

Rather than recasting the character in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel chose to honor Boseman’s legacy by allowing the story to continue through his family and the next generation of Wakandans.

In the film, King T’Challa dies from an undisclosed illness, while Shuri eventually assumes the role of Black Panther before introducing audiences to his young son, Prince T’Challa II.

A New Era for Wakanda

With David Jonsson officially stepping into the role, Black Panther 3 marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for Wakanda while preserving the legacy established by Chadwick Boseman.
